Iron Infusion
An iron infusion is a medical treatment in which iron is administered directly into a vein (IV) to replenish the body’s iron stores quickly. It is commonly recommended for individuals with iron deficiency or iron deficiency anemia who cannot tolerate oral iron supplements, do not respond adequately to them, have difficulty absorbing iron, or require rapid iron replacement due to significant blood loss or certain medical conditions.
Why it is needed?
Iron infusions can help improve hemoglobin levels, reduce symptoms such as fatigue, weakness, shortness of breath, dizziness, and improve overall energy and quality of life. Most patients tolerate the treatment well, with mild side effects such as temporary headache, nausea, muscle aches, or changes in taste. Serious reactions are uncommon but are managed promptly by the healthcare team.
Your healthcare provider will determine whether an iron infusion is appropriate for you based on your medical history, laboratory results, and individual health needs. Follow-up blood tests may be recommended to monitor your response to treatment and ensure that your iron levels have returned to a healthy range.
